The climax to ASA 808’s debut ‘Marine‘ originally had a 4/4 quadruplet kickdrum, but felt much stronger as a 6/8 ballad with its eclectic bells, haunting synths and natural drums, along with breath-taking vocals by William James. The song is about drowning but surviving, missing someone sorely, but having to move on. ’Marine’ was written through frustration; a scramble of anger woven together in attempt to make sense of feelings that never truly surface. ‘Start fire on sea’ is sung through dread of facing our greatest fears. Marine doesn’t address one single problem, but a young adult’s life of worry: a mess of anxiety that always finds positive resolution.
